Fernando Martín Velazco is a writer and the captain of Stultifera Navis Institutom, a platform for creative expeditions. He coordinated the multidisciplinary research cycle with gray whales Los Juegos del Leviatán (2017–2021), which was awarded second place in the Quo Artis Prize for Art, Science and Technology Production 2020 for the project The Maihaiowit’s Lullaby. “My work, as well as the projects I coordinate through the Stultifera Navis Institutom platform, are based on a methodology of creative expeditions that I have developed. This situates my practice in the peripheries, which I define as places characterized by the predominant absence of human presence. The multidisciplinary approach emerged naturally. Unlike laboratories, expeditions unfold in uncontrolled environments, where emerging themes take precedence. My background as a journalist and scientist has helped me to explore the poetics of different territories without losing sight of the state of the art regarding the natural world. There are many traits that characterize creative expeditions. I would like to highlight here their capacity to intertwine art and science with eco-critical narratives, which is where I situate my work.”

KLEODORA parte de la noción que interpreta la técnica como un sitio de actividad común entre arte y ciencia. A partir de esto, propone interpretar estéticamente el proceso de monitoreo ecológico como una forma de cuestionar la noción de valor en la obra de arte y, a su vez, explorar dispositivos que den continuidad al ejercicio material del cuidado de ecosistemas en riesgo. Durante esta residencia en El Ganzo, se desarrollará el programa piloto de KLEODORA, generando una serie de obras a partir de la observación y registro en campo de diferentes variables de datos y la interpretación creativa de sus resultados visuales y sonoros, todo en el Estero de San José. A su vez, se presentarán obras de dos ciclos de investigación de la plataforma Stultifera Navis en las que a partir de procesos de expedición artística a áreas naturales de la península de Baja California, desarrolló narraciones visuales, sonoras y performativas sobre la relación del ser humano con distintas especies marinas.
