Scarlett Baily is a Chicana muralist, painter, and illustrator based in Mexico City. Her work is an exploration and celebration of popular culture. Since receiving her B.A. in History of Art and Architecture from the University of California, Santa Barbara, she has lent her talents to both the fashion and art worlds in London, Tokyo, Barcelona, Los Angeles, New York, Bogotá, and Mexico City. She draws upon her own multicultural upbringing to tackle issues of identity, heritage, and belonging. Working in large scale and often in public, her mission is to preserve diversity in the era of globalization. She believes that her illustrated wonderlands can inspire connections to their spaces of encounter. The long sinuous lines and gestural minimalism recall her fashion background while giving a nod to urban art and mid-century publicity of the metropolis. Her work can be seen from Madison Avenue NYC to the outdoor walls of the largest market in the world, Central de Abastos in Mexico City. She has been recently inaugurated into the Society of Caricature Artists of México, where she is contributing illustrator for Design Hunter Magazine and Director of Galería La Optica, an alternative space exhibiting female artists. -- Scarlett Baily is a Brooklyn based visual artist. Durante su residencia en el hotel, Baily realizó varias piezas, entre ellas se encuentra el mural de cactus que dibujó en su suite inspirado en su pasado y en el viaje que hizo al jardín Wirikuta. También se encuentra otro mural donde plasmó el empoderamiento femenino y la libertad, “¿Porqué dividir, porqué la política debe separar a las personas?, la playa te une, compartimos un solo mar, ¿porqué no podemos compartir el resto y regresar a lo básico?”, comentó Scarlett haciendo alusión a la división que se está viviendo entre México y Estados Unidos. Una de las características que resaltó Baily de El Ganzo y que disfrutó mucho durante su residencia fue las barreras que logró romper entre la curaduría y el artista. Esta apertura le ayudó a crear contexto a sus piezas y también a destruir ese espacio que se crea entre el artista y el espectador al crear la obra. ”Me motivó a mantener el aspecto público, mi relación entre el espectador y a salirme de mi zona de confort; Como artista, el arte no tiene vida hasta que lo aprecian”. Además de su intervención dentro del hotel, la artista impartió una clase de pintura en el Community Project de El Ganzo en donde enseñó sus técnicas de retrato a 25 niños que asistieron a tomar su clase. Para ella el pintar es algo normal y la forma en la que México celebra el arte como parte de una comunidad en vez de una singularidad, fue lo que hizo que se enamorara del ambiente artístico de nuestro país. Las piezas que creó fueron de inspiración regional y representan su interpretación de un mundo que ya existía en El Ganzo, solamente tuvo que fijarse en su entorno y dejarse llevar por el sonido de una playlist fuera de serie.
