Shelly Kensler is an American multidisciplinary artist whose practice moves between painting, drawing, and hand-built ceramics, exploring the spaces where the natural world, the subconscious, and the mystical intersect.Having spent much of the past decade living and working between Brooklyn, Nashville, and Mexico City, Kensler draws from personal histories, dreamscapes, folklore, and intuitive processes to create works that feel simultaneously intimate and otherworldly. During her residency at Hotel El Ganzo, Shelly Kensler brought her exploration of mysticism, energy, and healing into the architecture of the hotel through a large-scale dragon mural created on the Rooftop.For Kensler, the dragon represents a powerful feminine energy, a figure associated with protection, healing, and transformation. Set against the openness of the Baja sky and the surrounding landscape, the creature becomes more than an image on a wall; it takes on the presence of a guardian, quietly inhabiting one of El Ganzo's most communal spaces.The work reflects themes that run throughout Kensler's practice, where folklore and symbolic figures become ways of giving form to forces that cannot always be seen or explained.
